Ne le dis à personne (Tell no one) (2009)

Absolutely stunning! When I think about this film I just run out of superlatives.

The cinematography brings a gravitas to events and the acting is absolutely top class but these are all peripheral to the storyline.

The central theme is an innocent(?) ordinary man fighting to clear his name, but the strength of the story is that it captivates and keeps the suspense and tension right until the final revelations of how the opening events of the film transpired.

The direction is taught and surefooted.  The chase sequence is inventive and at times painful to watch, bringing a realism that is often missing in other action films (I'm looking at you Bourne sequels).

Yes it's a French language film which is hard for some to follow, but it's possible the best movie I've ever seen.  Recommended!

Inglorious Basterds (2009)

Well it's certainly a Tarantino film.  Well made, great style and certainly quirky.  Sometimes I find his films a bit too much full of themselves, but I still enjoyed it and there's never a dull moment and plenty of black humour mixed in with a very some serious events.

He has a definite mastery and love of his craft which comes across in both the cinematography and also how he sets up scenes and I have to admire that even if the content sometimes isn't to my taste.

The "bar" scene is sheer class, with a feeling of claustrophobia adding to the tension of the encounter.  Without giving the ending away, once you do see the scene, do a quick straw poll with your friends/colleagues and you'll see it's a very astute observation of cultural differences.

If you don't like his other work you probably won't much like this either, but if you're a fan then go for it.  As a neutral I'd say watch it, but it's a bit of a Marmite film and not for everyone.  I enjoyed it.
